Fatherhood: As Told by Tim

It all starts as soon as you hold your child for the first time. A light shines down from the heavens and downloads all information needed to properly “Dad”, is what I assumed would happen.

Shortly after the barrage of bodily fluids and some serious nature, I realized I had no clue what I was doing. No matter what anyone tells you, you probably won’t feel prepared/ready to be a father. You might think so, but that quickly shoots out the window when you see the placenta, and you realize every movie and TV show lied to you… If I could go back and share some advice to younger Tim, “What would it be?”, you might ask. Great question fictitious person!

I will share a few of my “Magic Bullets” of fatherhood:

1. There are no magic bullets to fatherhood. What works for your father, brother, or best friend probably won’t work for you. Learning some aspects from a seasoned professional will help, but you should find your style/groove/(Insert something inspiring in French… everyone loves French).

2. Throw out all things you assume all dads have to know like; every Dad can fix any car, every Dad loves a cold beer, no Dad ever cries except when a daughter gets married, and the list goes on.

3. You will mess up, it is bound to happen and it will happen often because you are human. Don’t try to play it off, show them you are just as human as they are.

4. Pick up babywearing, you will play a lot more video games (I am still talking to younger Tim, right?)

If anyone reads this post, you will from now on be completely prepared for everything… Not really, but hopefully my talk with me shed some light on a few things.
